Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. was a well-known Civil Rights leader of the 1960s. King was born in 1929, and he changed and touched many lives during the span of his lifetime (McGuire Hutchings, 2007). King was a Baptist preacher, and he won several awards for being a leader of the Southern Christian Leadership Conference (McGuire Hutchings, 2007). King was also affiliated with the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People better known as the NAACP. King’s mission was to make America believe in equal rights for all no matter the color of skin or gender. King led marches to stand up for minorities whose skin were not white. King made it his duty to own responsibility of making everyone equal. Compassion Dr. King expressed many values while preaching and speaking to the nation. Dr. King’s Forgiveness Dr. King did not hate anyone because of any of the things that was done to him. Bases of Power Dr. King was a leader who demonstrated legitimate power, referent power, reward power, and expert power. Legitimate power is acquired by a high position or authority (Raven, 2008). Dr. King was the pastor of Ebenezer Baptist Church, and he was the founder of the Southern Christian Leadership Conference. Dr. King’s placement in those positions gave him access for the world to be able to hear what he had to say. Referent power is acquired by being an individual that another individual looks up to (Raven, 2008). Dr. King was respected by a lot of people. King was often commended for the work that he did for the community. People admired King for stepping out on faith and pursuing his dream. Leaders use reward power to offer their followers something that is wanted or desired (Raven, 2008). Dr. Martin Luther King and his followers reward would turn out to be â€Å"justice for all†. King and his protestors were willing to march, and protest to get the justice they deserved. A leader with expert power has knowledge which is valuable (Raven, 2008).
